Technicians entering the Automotive Technology program at Ralph R. McKee CTE High School will be fully prepared for the automotive industry at the completion of their three year classroom and live shop coursework. Over the course of the program, teachers with lifelong automotive experience and industry credentials will provide a balance of automotive theory, instructional shop and live shop. Authentic, hands-on practice with diagnostic thinking, HVAC, maintenance / repair, welding, automotive systems engineering, hybrid/ev systems, auto body, collision science, automotive detailing and more will occur in a live shop setting. Mandatory core units will be covered and students will be given the opportunity to engage in mastery-based self paced learning around topics they wish to pursue. Based on our graduate data, we aim to prepare students to work in a repair field, start their own business, enter a secondary trade school or a college level program.
Technicians who successfully complete the Automotive Technology coursework will sit for a final practical exam and all 8 of the entry level certification exams offered by the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation. Technicians are required to pass G1 Light Maintenance and Repair in order to graduate with the CTE endorsement.
Through our long and proud partnerships with the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Technicians who satisfactorily complete the coursework and certification exams will be eligible for employment programs after graduation. These articulation agreements replace the industry experience requirements for many entry level NYC positions with MTA, DCAS, NYPD, FDNY, PARKS DEPT and more.
