Our Carpentry & Building Trades program seeks to prepare our students for entry-level employment as carpenters in both new construction and renovation applications. This course is designed to provide hands-on installation of doors, windows, and roofing along with interior finish operations such as drywall, trim – joinery, and molding. It also presents basic theory including occupational math, and trade-related formulas designed to refresh basic mathematics skills related to the trade of Carpentry. Students learn a production method for translating blueprints to wall plates and framing a house from the foundation up. An introduction to machine carpentry including how to safely set up and use traditional shop tools such as the table saw, drill press, jointer, thickness planer, radial arm saw, band-saw, and router are components of the curriculum. This course is included with “Construction Skills 2000”
Students who receive 12 credits in the Carpentry & Building Trades program will have the opportunity to take an Industry Relevant certification exam. Additionally, students in the senior year will have the opportunity to participate in a program for advanced placement into any New York City Local Union.
Students will obtain 54 Work Based Learning hours during their three years within the program. Through these 54 hours, students will develop career-building skills, work with professionals, as well as attend internships focusing on the field of Carpentry and Building Trades.
